Oooooook

Just got done in the poker room trying to satellite in for cheap. That didn't go well at all. I airballed 3 10 man qualifiers for a total of -$1650. I busted QQ vs KQ, A6 vs QT, and K9 vs QJ, so I can't really complain. I was in as a favorite all 3 times. I may or may not take another shot at the $550 tomorrow before the event starts. Otherwise, I'm going to have to direct buy-in for $5,000. I did win $378 playing 30/60 online for like 45 minutes earlier today, so that's a positive. I'll have updates very infrequently from the main event tomorrow. Possibly only at the dinner break. There is no website covering the tournament.

Great day

The fun continues. Neil and I woke up at 11 a.m. and went to a restaurant and ate some pizza and then hit the jet skis. Those things are amazing. I was so in love with it that I think I may invest in one :) We chilled out at the pool for a little bit and now we're about to go into the city to get some food, and I'm gonna pick up a digital camera. We have a dinner tonight at 6 p.m. and then a concert from 8-10 p.m. After that they are opening up some cash games and they're having a $500 10 man freezeout for a seat in the main event at around 10:30 pm. I'm definitely going to play in and try to talk some guys into making a deal if we get 3 handed so I'm in for like 3400 instead of 5000. The main event starts at 3 pm tomorrow. It's going to be a lot of fun.

Yesssssss $15,000 richer

Wow. What a day. Neil and I went out to the beach but couldn't get in the ocean because the lifeguard said the water was too rough :( We played some ping pong poolside and then got in the pool. We went to dinner with Randali at Outback and that was great. Taxi fair is so expensive though and is really pissing us off. Listen to this business deal I struck up though that made me $15,000 richer...

So I open up the $750k guaranteed lobby with 50 players left and Adam "Donflun (KittyKate111)" Dujmovic was average in chips. Winner was slated to make $191,000. So I rail him until there are about 25 players left and amazingly another good friend of ours from Australia, Josh "Jsmooth888" Van Dyke pops onto the screen and is above average in chips. So Neil, Randali and I decide to rail the rest of the tournament or until both our guys bust. With 11 players left KittyKate111 makes a raise UTG and the BB shoves him all-in. Adam instantly calls with AhAs and the BB shows KQhh. Amazingly the flop comes ThJh5h and Adam is dead to the remaining hearts except the 9h. It doesn't hit and he takes a sick beat to miss the final table. As the final table starts up I make a basically even money investment on Josh. I offer him $4100 for 10% of his winnings in this tournament. He needed to finish 1st-5th to profit. He is playing so well right now and has just locked up a seat to the LA Poker Classic in mid Feb. I really had a good feeling about him taking it down, even though he was 4th in chips. He played superb and then final 4 he doubled with K7dd vs 55 to put him just behind chip leader. Finally he got it heads up and lost 2 huge races with A6 vs 22 and A5 vs 33. He grinded back though and took down the tournament and $191,000 with QQ vs K4!! I am so happy for him (and me of course). My payout amounts to $19,100 minus the $4100 I had invested for a total of 15 g's. Things are going pretty well right now. Let's hope I can continue them by Final tabling the CPC :)

alkdfjadlkfj aldkfjal'dsfa'dslk

Man, we partied really, really hard last night and now we're paying for it. We didn't wake up until about 12:45 pm local time and both feel like death. We grabbed a sandwich at a cool little restaurant, and now we're gonna go out to the beach.

Yep

"Why did you hit there?" -Random Guy #1 at blackjack table
"I felt it was unnecessary to stay on 15 for one-third of my net worth." -Random guy #2, after betting $100 on a hand of BJ

Fab. Neil and I beat up a random club out in Nassau for a few drinks and then partied at a bar in the casino for a few hours. Tomorrow's plans involve jet skiing for a bit and hitting the beach. Randali and Luvmyaceking both arrive tomorrow so we'll hang out with them during the day. Also, we have a partypoker hospitality suite we want to attend at 4 pm local. This place is a dream come true. If I final table this one I may never leave.

Sidenote: I could get used to this lifestyle. There's something to be said about drinking on random weekdays at 2 p.m. Keep me out of the pit (playing -EV games) though, or I'm gonna go broke :(

Too much fun

This place is absolutely amazing. I got here and met up with Neil and we walked around the resort for a little bit. We got pawned at the roulette wheel for an undisclosed amount when the damn thing came off red, black, red, red, red, red, red and we were betting black each time. Neil went to sleep because he had to wake up at like 4 am today, so I've been beating up the bar while he crashes. We're going to go out to a bar or club in a few hours. There is no poker room, which is kinda cool. That will give us more time to check out this place. The tournament doesn't start until Tuesday, so we have tomorrow and Monday to just relax and find out what this place is about. Internet access is also not available in the rooms, so I have to come down to the lobby to blog. Thus, my blogs will be up a little less often than usual.

Sidenote: We saw Derek Jeter in the casino today playing blackjack at about $200 a hand. To say he was the talk of the casino would be an understatement.

Sitting in Orlando

Yesterday I was a complete idiot and forgot to go to the bank to get cash for the tournament, so I found myself in a little bit of a dilemma today. I had to catch a taxi from the airport in Orlando to one of the two Amsouth's in Orlando that are open on Saturday. That cost me $100 in cab fair :( I got to the bank and the lady told me that she couldn't give me $15,000 in cash because it was a Saturday. After successfully arguing with a manager I got $8,000 in cash and $7,000 in travelers checks. That was quite a headache. I don't think I'll forget next time. It's 1:15 eastern time and my 90 minute flight to Nassau leaves in about 15 minutes. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do when I get there. I have to meet up with Neil Trahey so I can put my stuff in his room. Maybe we'll hit the beach or something.

Cheers,
Shannon

Neil, Reed and I ate breakfast at The Mesh at like 9:30 and then went to our respective rooms to log online sessions because we're all getting shelled and need to work. Things didn't get any better for me. I played 18 200-15s and a 400-30 at a sickening 1/2/1/15 for a loss of exactly $700. We're going to find something to do in the city. Also, partypoker sent us letters to our room telling us about a private party that they're hosting tomorrow night strictly for partypoker qualifiers. That should be a lot of fun. Also, they are holding a freeroll for the partypoker qualifiers in The Crown, where they put $50 AUD in for everyone who plays. It won't be much money in the prizepool, but it will be extremely interesting because everyone will be playing for partypoker bragging rights. And this just in: I think I've forgotten how to play poker.

Um, fuck.

I met up with Neil today, grabbed some lunch and went to the casino. Neil, Reed and I pretty much got snockhammered on beer and wine for 11 hours straight and broke only for dinner. I had a good first 6 hours in poker and won a whopping $35 playing roulette with Reed because I'm obviously a roulette pro. After dinner though, we went back to the casinos and I dumped a grand to some 22-24 year old donkey fishes that I should be outplaying in my sleep. I'm hesitant to even do the numbers. Good news though, I'm down less than I thought because I forgot to do some $AUD to $USD conversions! Yay!
From here there are 2 options: I can lose the $70,000 more dollars I have to my name and jump out of my 22nd floor hotel window or I can grind back to the black. It's going to be one of the 2, preferably the latter.

Sidenote: It's actually pretty humorous. The brutal lows of high stakes gambling is what makes the highs so amazing.

Pawned online :(

It's 10:45 am. I just woke up. After my casino win I played the 12 200-15s at a demoralizing 0/0/2/10 for -$1780. This is the worst 200-15 run I've been on in about 2 months. Things have to turn around. I play SnG's robotically, so when I have ridiculous losses like this it is simply variance. I lose every race in the final 4, and not only do I lose the race-- partypoker punishes me by spiking it on the river.

Back on track

I went out in the city for a little bit yesterday from 1-3 pm and really enjoyed it. I just walked around and observed everything and picked up a few souvenirs. It was nice to have a break from the stress involved in high stakes gaming.

I played a round of 200-15 when I got back and went 1/0/1/4 for +$110, and I just logged 3 hours in the casino playing $2/5 NL and tripled my stack up from $500 to 1498 for $998 profit. I decided I was going to play ultra-tight and it paid off. 12 hands or so in I raised to $30 behind 2 limpers with AJ and got calls from both limpers, a donkey fish Australian bloke and an Asian woman who played even worse. The Asian woman was hysterical. Her boyfriend was sitting behind her sweating her cards, and she would only turn around to look at the table when the dealer told her it was her turn. Her boyfriend and her were doing things that bordered on public ludeness. Each time she would bust he would hand her 5 crisp aussie green $100 notes to rebuy. Back to the AJ hand. The flop beamed A45 rainbow. I was at about $450 in chips and bet $45 of them on the flop. The bloke called and to my amazement the Asian woman checkraised me all-in for $313 total! It didn't take me long to decide. I moved all-in over the top (in order to cover the bloke). The turn came a king and river 8. Since she called me I had to turn over my cards first and she threw hers in the muck. About 20 minutes later I took the blokes chips when I raised it to $18 from the cutoff and he made it $50 from the BB. I had KQo and called. The flop came K45 and he led for $200, twice the pot. I pondered and finally set him all-in for his $625 total. I only had about $900 at the time so it would be a pretty big hit if i was wrong. He called me almost instantly so I thought for sure I was behind. The board blanked out and he confidently turns up K2. I had to check the board to make sure there wasn't a 2 because he was so confident. I win. I pretty much folded for the next 90 minutes and then cashed out. I'm going to log 12 200-15s since I'm wide awake and then go eat some breakfast. My friend Neil just arrived in town, so I'll probably hang out with him for a while tomorrow.

Out of speed tournament

I just busted 90 minutes into the speed tournament in 120th out of 204. It was a really neat tournament and a lot of fun. I wish I could've lasted longer. The way I've been running I wasn't surprised how I got knocked out. *Note: I'm not whining about a bad beat here I'm just posting it in case anyone is interested in how I busted. He played the hand perfectly and so did I. It was just a matter of how the cards fell from there. With blinds 50/100 I called a raise of 250 from the button with the 2 black sevens. I had about 2800 of my 4000 starting chips and the button had me covered. I flopped the moral nuts when it came down 732 with 2 hearts. I checked and he bet 250 and i made it 750. He said all-in instantly and I pushed my chips in even faster. Unfortunately he had AQ of hearts so I wasn't as big a favorite as I'd've liked. Of course the turn is a Jack of hearts and the river blanks and I'm out just like that. You have to take a lot of chances in this tournament and it becomes quite a crapshoot at times. Lots of pros apparently just made it in town. Karina Jett, Chip Jett, Kathy Liebert and Scott Fischman were all on tables right next to me. I have no desire to play any more poker today, so I'm going out in the city.

I'm kinda down right now, but it's not about at the money at all. The money is a virtual non-factor. If I didn't have the bankroll to withstand the losses that I've accumulated this trip then I wouldn't have made the business decision to play the games. I'm just disappointed that I haven't been able to prove myself as a player amongst better players. It will come in time though, I hope.

Um...

Another frustrating morning online. I played 18 tournaments from 8-11 am at 1/3/1/13 for a net loss of $880. If I could win a 60/40 or 70/30 in the month of January that would be cool. My live tournament starts in an hour. I'm going to shower and then eat some lunch. If I don't do well in the live tournament today then I'm going to take a break from poker for the rest of the day (maybe tomorrow as well) and go find something exciting to do in the city.

:(

Another bad night. I got back from the NL tournament and dropped $970 online, mostly to 3 outters and bullshit like that. From there I went down to the casino and dropped a whole $70 over 5 hours of $20/40. Actually I was dead even playing, but I paid $70 for an hour massage while playing. I guess I have to count that as poker loss though, since I wouldn't be receiving it otherwise. I drank merlot throughout because I think it really helps my table image and I die of boredom one tabling $20/40 live. I played super aggressive again. I went ahead and entered the $1600 speed tournament. It starts with 204 players and wittles down to 36 at the end of tomorrow, playing 6 handed throughout. The top 36 get on TV, so I hopefully I will win my first 6 handed table and achieve that. I'm going to try to swap 10% with some of the players that I've met here already. That way I have some equity even if I don't cash. I really want to get my name out on an international stage though, and I can do that by doing well in this tournament or the Aussie Main Event.

Sidenote: If I hear one more bad beat story in the casino, in the urinal, at the bar, or online I think I'm going to throw myself head first out of the 22nd story hotel room. I don't tell them and I think I deserve the right to not have to listen to the same stories over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. Poker players are about the least sympathetic people you'll ever meet, so I see no reason why these clowns continue to tell me bad beat stories. Some complete donkey fish that was to my right this evening started to tell me a bad beat story and I promptly put on my iPod headphones ;) He didn't take too kindly to that.

Out in 148th

I just busted from the $1100 NL tournament, 2 hours and 15 minutes in, in 148th. 256 players started. I sat down just before the tournament started and had the misfortunate of having last year's Main Event champion, Jamil Dia, seated immediately to my right.

I'll talk about my table for a bit. Our table was absolutely nuts or the first 90 minutes or so. There was an extremely drunk, fat, troll-looking guy in the 7 seat, an extremely attractive blonde woman (who we later learned is a model in Australia), and players of about 4 other nationalities. The drunk guy was a complete nut. He raised virtually every pot and would fold to the reraises. He all-in reraised with about 1000 total and Dia instantly called 800 more with 99. The drunk showed A3 offsuit. The ace got there so this guy stuck around for a while longer. Finally he busted when he called an all in raise (for like his last 1400) with 29 of diamonds on a board of AJA with 2 diamonds. While all this was going on he took about 7 shots of tequilla. It was absolutely hysterical. He was hitting on the woman at the table, and she was playfully acting like she was interested. I actually did not take a flop for the first 45 minutes (all of level 1). Of course I was playing tight, but I think my best hand was like ATo and I wasn't playing that against a raise. Finally I got to take a flop when I completed from the small blind in level 2 (blinds 50/100) with A7o behind like 6 limpers. I missed completely and folded to a bet. About 2 minutes later I picked up 2 red sixes on the button and it was folded to me. I made it 300 and both blinds folded quickly (I had a really tight image). I folded the next 9 hands until I was in the cutoff in an unopened pot with Ah-5s. I made it 300 and much to my chagrin the button called. The flop came down Q95 and I led for 400 and the button quickly called. I had about 1800 in chips as we took the turn card. The turn was a Ten and I liked it. I felt he was very weak, so I led for 700 more. The button pondered for, literally, 5 minutes until someone called the clock on him. He used the entire clock and finally folded QJ faceup. I wanted to show my cards very badly, but obviously didn't want to lose my tight image, so I didn't. This put me at about 3300 and I finished level 2 and took 3175 chips to the first break. I didn't play many pots (I literally entered the pot only about 7 times in 2.25 hours) in level 3 until the last minutes of it. A young, nerdy looking player, who eventually knocked me out, opened from middle position for 400 and I put all 2400 remaining in with AQhh. This was a very big bet relative to the pot, but he had a monster stack. I didn't want to take a flop. He'd also just shown down Q7o on a raise, so I was pretty sure I was ahead. He folded. Soon after in middle position I found 99 and made it 600 (level 4 now). Tony Dunst, the player from UWM that I talked about yesterday moved all in over the top from the cutoff and had me covered. I'm almost 100% sure he had jacks. He certainly didn't have 22 through 88, so I tossed the 9s in the muck facedown. He'd just been moved to the table. I was down to about 1900 when I found AKo under the gun and made it 700. It was folded around to Jamil in the big blind and he folded. 2 hands later I was in the small blind. 3 players limped in for 200. Jamil, on the button made it 1500. I was certain Jamil was making a play at the pot from the button. I felt he was trying to use his celebrity status to move everyone off of their hand. I peaked at my cards and squeezed out 2 black tens. I took about 45 seconds and then decided this was a good spot to move them in. I was at about half the average in chips with 2425 total. I felt that Jamil didn't even have AJ-AK, so I felt I had him dominated. I pushed in 2425 total, knowing Dia has to call because he's committed. From here things take an unbelievable turn. The first limper folds and I nearly tip my chair over when the 2nd limper, the nerdy kid with probably 20,000 in chips announced that he was all-in over the top. Dia laughed and folded his J9 of spades faceup. I was spot on with my read on Dia. I was absolutely sick though when the 2nd limper turned over KK. Players just don't limp with KK behind limpers at this level, so it was pretty shocking. The board blanked out so I was done :( On another sad note, I played some $2/5 NL this morning and lost $271. I was + about $500 until a donkeyfish took about $400of my chips. He made it $75 bucks behind 2 limpers and I pondered and made it $275 from the small blind with AKo. This schmuck just flat called off $200 of his last $300. Of course I'm not folding the hand now for his last $100 so I announce to the dealer that I'm all-in in the dark. The flop comes J x x and this guy calls instantly and turns up AJ. It comes blank-blank and I lose this $750 pot. I verbally berate this Australian player for about 30 seconds. I was probably out of line, but it was just a painful beat.

Sidenote: While playing $2/5 NL this morning I met a really cool kid from Kansas Univ. who actually qualified for the main event on partypoker as well. We told each other our screen names on party and he recognized mine. That was pretty cool. I'm sure we'll hang out a bit for the remainder of the trip. Also, a phenomenal online player and friend of mine, "Neil_Trahey", arrives in town tomorrow, so I'll know someone else. The $1600 speed tournament is tomorrow and I haven't decided if I'm going to play it or not. I'm going to play online for a couple hours and then play some $20/40 in the casino and will decide based on my results. Only 10% of tournament players are getting paid in the 2 that I've played so far, so assuming all players are even in talent (which obviously isn't true), I should cash 1 out of 10 times, and I've only tried twice ;) I'm still thinking positive.

Solid morning online

Last night wasn't much fun. After I busted out of the limit tournament I came up to my room and played 12 200-15s and lost $1180, mostly to suckouts ;) I was going to go play some live $20/40 but ended up just going to bed at 8 pm local time. I'm still kinda on my American sleep schedule. I woke up this morning at 630 am local time and pawned 12 200-15s for +$2220. I'm going to shower now, get some breakfast, and go play some sort of NL cash game in the casino in preparation for today's NL event at 12:30. Here are my numbers from the trip so far. Amounts from live games have been converted to US dollars.

Jan 7: +$1152
Jan 8: -$1189 live, -$1180 online
Jan 9 (as of 9 am local): +$2220 online

That's +$1003 USD on the trip so far. I'll take it.

Sidenote: My good friend from the online community Michael "Worldsgrtest" Banducci is in the final 28 of the Main Event at the Pokerstars Caribbean Adventure tournament in the Bahamas. Someone stakes him half of the buy-in, so he will get 50% of his winnings. The winner makes $1.3 Million. Wish him luck. You can follow his progress at cardplayer.com.

Out in 39th

I just busted in 39th out of 136. I guess it was a decent showing for my first live tournament, but I really would've liked to cash. I actually doubled with 8-8 vs 5-5 coming out of the break, but then got all-in as a 7/3 underdog with KQ vs AK. Unfortunately I didn't suck out :( I was low all day and didn't have a very good seat. Both players to my left were defending their blinds each time I raised from late position. I was all in about 6 times throughout the course of the day but only in with the worst hand once when I had Q9 vs A8 and sucked out a board of Q x x x x. One of the players to my left is a fantastic 21 year old from the Univ. of Wisconsin-Milwaukee that is studying abroad here. He had a massive chip stack when I left. He's a cool guy. I'll rail for a little bit later on to see if he final tables it. I crunched the numbers and overall on the trip in live play I am minus a whopping $50. I was going to take a nap, but I've changed my mind. I'm going to play 12 200-15s and then go play some $20/40 and watch the end of the limit MTT. I'll probably get in bed by 1 AM local time to get some sleep for the 12:30 pm start tomorrow of the $1000+100 NL hold 'em event. Marcel Luske was also still in the tournament when I busted and Jamil Dia, last years Australian Championship Main Event winner is also here playing monster stakes cash games.

I'd previously said that Melbourne is 15 hours ahead of Alabama's time zone. It's actually 17 hours ahead. I also saw that we lost to The Univ. of Mississippi in Tuscaloosa tonight in basketball, which is pretty sick.

Third Break

We are done with level 6 and I am dangerously low. I have just 1300 chips and blinds are about to be 300/600. The first Ace or King I see and the chips are in. 45 players remain and 18 get paid.

Saturday, January 07, 2006

Second Break

After level 4 (180 minutes of play), I'm at 3350 chips and the average is 5300ish. Blinds will kick up to 150/300 when the tournament starts back in a few minutes. I was as low as 500 chips before I tripled up and won a pot with Ace high. I checkraised all of my chips to maximize the pot with A4hh and 2 other players in after a flop of 367 with 2 hearts. I won a few pots here and there, and I'm in position to contend. First place will pay $43,000. There are 75 or so players left.

First break

After 2 levels (45 minutes each) I am down to 2150 chips. We started with 134 players and are now down to 128. I had AA and QQ go down in level 1, but I'm still sitting alright. Average stack is about 3260. Blinds are now increasing to 75/150

Down a little

I woke up at 7 am this morning and grabbed some breakfast at The Conservatory in the Crown Casino. It was the most amazing buffet I've ever eatin' at. I think I ate enough to feed 7 poker players. From there I came down to register for the limit $1000+100 in the poker room. I did so, and I've been playing $20/40 for the last 4 hours. The tournament starts in about 20 minutes. I was -$480 for the session this morning. It wasn't nearly as soft a game today. 7 bets isn't much over 4 hours, basically even. I lost a fairly large pot to a gutshot on the river and that was kinda demoralizing. I'll update my limit MTT status ASAP.

Good night at live tables...

It's 10:23 p.m. local time and I just got back from a 7 hour live session at the casino. I bludgeoned the $20/$40 limit game for +38 big bets ($1530 AUD) over the session. I think this amounts to like $1200 USD. The $20/40 game was about as soft as they come. When I first arrived at the casino I was going to play $2/5 NL, but there was a substantial wait, and I just wasn't in the mood for that. The $20/40 game looked verrrry soft so I decided it was the best investment. I actually was stuck for the first 90 minutes or so. I bought in for $1200 at the game and got as low as $800 until the following hand came up. While I was in the small blind I watched as 5 players limped before the button (that's right, 5). The button decided to raise it to $40 and I squeezed out a monster in the small blind, 32 of hearts ;). I did some quick math and decided that I needed to throw in the $30 extra bucks because of the sick implied odds. I knew all 5 limpers would call the extra $20 from the raiser, and they did. I announced to the dealer that I checked in the dark. To my amazement the flop came down 9h 2s 3c. I couldn't ask for very much better. I regretted checking in the dark though, as I could have driven drawing hands out by betting immediately from the small. A middle position player led at the pot and the button (a predictable player) made it $40. I quickly made it $60 with bottom 2 pair. The bettor and button called. I nearly fell out of my seat when I turned a 2 for a boat. I pondered and decided to bet. The MP player folded and much to my liking, the button raised. I put on a hollywood act, took some time and then called. It gets better :) The river card gives me the stone cold cooler. I river the case 2 for quads. I check and again the button bets. I raise and we get a full 5 bets in (unlimited capping heads up) before the button says "I call. If you have a 2 you win mate." I flip up the nuts and he shows two black aces for twos full of aces. This is one of the most memorable hands I've ever been involved in.

Australian casinos are interesting in the sense that it is against the rules to tip the dealers. Of course it's not win-win. You have to pay for your drinks in The Crowne since it has a monopoly and they have no need to comp players to continue coming to the casino since there is no competition. After I won the monster pot with 23hh I decided to start drinking. I had an amazing table image of the drunken american who has no idea what he's doing. I couldn't've been happier. I drank merlot all night and played super aggressive and ran over the entire table. Another memorable hand involved me opening a pot from MP with 49 offsuit. It was folded around to a Vietnamese player who lived in LA and he was visibly upset with me running over the table. He called the raise. The flop totally missed me. TJ5. He checked and I bet of course. The turn was the K of clubs, putting 2 clubs on the board. He checked and I bet. This guy checkraised me. I looked right through him and knew he was weak and decided to make a no limit play (even though we were playing limit) and flat called him with the intention of taking the pot on the river. The turn was the Jack of clubs for a final board of TJ5KJ with 3 clubs! This guy led into the pot and I raised immediately with nothing. He ponders for like 2 minutes and then says "This is either the best laydown in the world or the worst" and throws AJ into the muck pile! You know I'm not going to let that bluff go unshown. He laid down for like 8:1 odds. I turned it faceup for the whole table to see and he looked like he saw a ghost.

This place is so great. I used my $1100 of my winnings to go ahead and buy my seat into the limit event that starts in about 13.5 hours. I have a strange feeling that I'm going to final table it.

Sidenote: I saw poker greats Jeff Lisandro, Mel Judah and Kathy Liebert in The Crowne tonight. Lisandro was playing a 3 handed mixed $500/1000 game with 2 unknowns (hold em and omaha 80b).

I'm gonna get some sleep. More updates ahead.

In Melbourne!

For what it's worth, the post below was actually posted at 3:13 Central Time, but I couldn't get it to go through until just now, when I reached Melbourne. The one hour trip over from Sydney was nice. I started talking to the girl who was sitting next to me, and she's actually an Australian from Melbourne. She was returning from a 2 month trip to Philadelphia, PA, USA to visit her sister, who married an American guy. She's 19 and answered a lot of questions that I had about the city. Her family was picking her up and, this being Australia, she actually offered to give me a ride to the Crowne from the airport. I couldn't refuse, as this saved me $40 AUD in cab fare. The Crowne is actually 35-40 minutes from the airport. I didn't realize this.

My room is phenomenal. I'm on the 22nd floor (Room 2275) at The Crown Promenade. I'm overlooking the city of Melbourne, and I can see for miles. The Promenade is the sister hotel to the Crown Casino, so I simply have to walk across the street to play poker. I have to pay about $18/24 hours for internet access, which is gay, but I'll just have to make about $225 (break even) playing online over the 2 weeks that I'm here to cover that. Amazingly though, partypoker paid for all 13 nights of my hotel here. I went to check-in and the lady said there would be no balance. Partypoker was supposed to pick up only 8 nights, and I was going to pay 5 nights out of pocket. This saves me $600 or so, so I may play another event. I'm about to grab a quick nap, shower, and head down to the casino. This whole city is so lovely. The way it is set up with the beach on one side of a lonnnnng strip of streets reminds me of Panama City or Destin, FL. It's 1:42 p.m. here on the 7th, so I'll post once more at the end of tonight to give my results in the live cash games/online tournaments that I play tonight. If there aren't many good games going on in the casino this evening I may go check out the horse tracks.

Sidenote: Australian paper currency looks like Monopoly money and is un-rippable.

Just touched down in Sydney

I just arrived in Sydney, Australia after a grueling 16 hour flight. I probably got about 3 hours sleep overall because the seats were virtually straight up and next to impossible to doze off in. The food on the Int'l flight was surprisingly decent, and they had a stellar movie collection that included Cinderella Man, Dukes of Hazzard, and Seabiscuit. I didn't watch any of them all the way through though, as I took random 20 minute naps. I'm about 15 minutes away from boarding my flight to Melbourne, which I think is just about an hour flight away. Comparable to a BHM to ATL plane trip from what I hear. The Sydney airport is huge. I'm about to walk around and check it out a little bit before boarding the plane to Melbourne. It's 8:45 a.m. on Jan. 7 in Australia and there is actually a Australian Poker Championship event today at noon local time. I may even play it. I don't feel too much jet lag from the plane. It is a $500 AUD ($370 USD) buy-in Pot Limit/No limit hold 'em event. I've never heard of such a thing, but I think the pot is probably capped at a certain amount before all flops. If I don't feel in playing shape then I won't play it however. The other option is to catch about a 4 or 5 hour nap after I get checked in in Melbourne and then wake up and play some $15/$30 limit or something to that tune in the casino. I'm totally amped about ALMOST being to the hotel and I will have more updates around 2 a.m. local time for you guys back in the states. The few Australian people I've already met in the Sydney airport are really fascinating. I hope they continue to be...

Barry Bonds sighting...

I'm sitting in the Los Angeles airport, and I'm pretty much in shock. Future baseball hall of famer, Barry Bonds was on my flight from ATL to LAX. He was sitting in first class, and I thought it was him from the back of the plane. I rushed off the plane when we landed and hurried to see if it was actually him. I decided not to approach him in an attempt not to feed his already huge ego :) As you can imagine, he wasn't embraced very warmly in rival city LA (home of Bonds' rival NL west team, The Dodgers). He was quickly greeted by his limo driver before anyone really had a chance to ask for autographs. The guy is an absolute physical monster.

Other than that, I'm on a by-the-minute computer at LAX. Amazingly, wireless internet connection is not available for free at one of America's largest airports :( Everything is running smooth other than that. I guess I won't be able to talk to anyone via phone or AIM until I get to Melbourne about 24 hours from right now. My phone is dead and my charger is in my suitcase. I was going to play poker online for a few hours while I wait for my Int'l flight, but that isn't an option anymore. I think I'm going to grab a bite to eat and have a few drinks to try to make the time go by :) On a sidenote, the city of LA is absolutely gorgeous from the plane on the descent to the runway.

It's almost time!

I've only got about 41 hours until I board the first leg of my flight, which will be from BHM to ATL. I travel from Birmingham to Atlanta to Los Angeles to Sydney to Melbourne. Expected time of arrival in Melbourne is January 7th at around 11 a.m. local time. Something to note as you read these posts is that Melbourne is 15 hours ahead of The United States' Central Time Zone. More updates coming soon...
